The Degrassi semiformal dance is approaching and Lucy is worried
because she doesnt have a date. Her fears are quickly put to rest when she is asked
to the dance by a guy named Dale. The whole episode is a little story that Lucy records on
video for LD.
However, her run of good luck doesnt last very long when she is informed that the
girls volleyball practice time has been bumped to the early morning so that the boys
basketball team can have the after school practice time. This prompts a cry of sexism by
Lucy, Heather, Erica, and the rest of the volleyball squad. They all go in to talk to the
physical education department, but are told that the boys basketball team deserves the
time because they did so well last year.
In a show of protest, Lucy organizes the girls volleyball team to set up their nets during
the boys basketball time slot. The boys tell the girls to take the nets down, but the
girls refuse and insist on speaking with the team captain. To Lucys surprise, the
captain of the basketball team turns out to be her date, Dale. Before Dale gets a chance
to see Lucy, she runs out of sight. Heather and Erica call the school sexist, and Dale
proclaims that “nobody cares about girls volleyball”.
Finally, Dale instructs his teammates to tear down the nets so that they may practice.
Lucy later reveals in a video-letter to L.D. that she didnt argue with Dale because
she wants him to like her. With her options running low, Lucy talks to Bronco and arranges
a debate over the allocation of school practice time. Representing the boys basketball
team on the day of the great debate, Dale insists that they deserve the time and new
equipment because it is good for the schools image. He repeats his previous statement of
“nobody cares about girls volleyball” and Lucy finally stands up. She basically
rips Dales argument to shreds, and Dale is visibly upset.
The decision is put to a vote, and the girls volleyball team wins. After the debate, Dale
tells Lucy that he cant take her to the dance because he has to go to his
aunts house that night.
The next day Bronco tells Lucy that despite the debate, the principal has decided that the
boys basketball team still should get the practice time. Just as it looks like nothing is
going right for Lucy, Bronco asks her out to the semiformal dance. Lucy
agrees.
