Degrassi
sequel is big break for K-W’s Chrissy Schmidt

For
K-W native Chrissy Schmidt, landing a role on the new Degrassi series was the
break she’d been waiting for.

“It’s way better than I expected,” says the quiet, softspoken actor.

“You make friends, meet new people. Every single day you get to do cool
stuff.”

The Grade 9 student had only a commercial, a short film and some community
theatre experience to her credit when her agent called with the news: She
would play the popular but impressionable Terri on the sequel to one of the
biggest success stories on Canadian TV.

That was last June. Four months later, filming is about to wrap on Season 1
and her first starring episode –which sees Terri getting drunk at a school
dance — is set to air tomorrow at 7 pm. on 13, 9, Cable 12, 9.

“Chrissy’s got that lovely girl-next-door quality I relate to,” says
series co-creator Linda Schuyler, who hails from Paris, Ont. “She has about
her a genuineness and vulnerability that I find particularly attractive.”

Director Stefan Scaini says her presence has helped the series establish a
unique tone.

“She has a nice honest comic quality, an internal humour to her which I
like,” he notes. “She’s always got a slight ‘comment’ on her face about
whatever’s happening within the scene. It makes her really interesting to cut
to.”

For her part, Chrissy is modest, saying it’s just “acting,” and that the
experience has built her confidence in front of the camera.

“I don’t even consider Degrassi a job because it’s what I love to do,” she
says. “And it’s just so much fun.

“The tough thing is that it’s going to end soon. It was such a great time.
We’ve all been together and we all got so close. But I’m sure we’ll all keep
in touch.”
