MeeVee Exclusive: Interview with Degrassi: The Next Generation’s Daniel Clark
Daniel Clark marked his return to Degrassi: The Next Generation this season in true Sean Cameron style. His character kissed his old girlfriend, got in an illegal street race, and ended up jailed for assault. During a break in filming, we had the chance to catch up with Daniel. Heres what he had to say about the show, dating, and what makes a real man.
What made you decide to return to Degrassi after a year and a half off?
Timing. It’s a great show, why not? I had confidence this was going to be a great season. I’ll do anything challenging. Thats why Im taking acting classes; no one is perfect. You can always improve.
What was it like to wake up and realize you werent a part of season 5?
I don’t watch every week, so it didn’t really matter. The unfortunate thing was not working with the cast, crew, and writers. But I was able to see them. I met up with them at a mall tour in Los Angeles. Thats the only time I thought about it.
What is your favorite episode of Degrassi?
My favorite episodes are the first two in season six; named “Here Comes Your Man Parts 1 & 2.” Before that, it was “Time Stands Still.” I’m in awe of how it all came together. It was awesome.
Was it hard to deal with the school shooting issue? What was your reaction when you read the script?
It was intense. It was a long time coming with the bullying and Rick. When I read it, it was like, Whoa. It (the bullying) escalated quickly.
What can you tell us about the path Sean is taking as a character this season? Is Sean ever going to catch a break?
Maybe. Life’s not fair. Degrassi does a good job of reflecting this. A show can hire models to act, but their days are numbered. They can have great ratings but it doesnt last forever. Its important for people to be able to relate to the characters on the show. HBO does a great job; they have actors who put it on the line with shows like Six Feet Under. Its not glamorous. Shows like this – they’re bringing it and theyre not typical. Thats so important.
Whats your take on the two major onscreen relationships youve had? Who do you think Sean will end up with?
Well, it’s a story; it’s completely make-believe. Both relationships are crazy but both are good for fans. Everyone has their issues. It doesn’t matter if you love them. Sean didn’t have to deal with either of their issues, he left. He comes back when the issues are already settled.
Who are you the closest with on set?
With the producer David Lowe, Mike Lobel, (Jay Hogart) and Shane Kippel (Spinner).
Whats with the new hair?
Umm, I dont know. I just decided I wasnt going to cut it anymore (laughter). I went for a very long time without cutting it. I decided to go with long hair because I was tired of going short. Everyone has that spiked look going on; it takes a real man to have long hair.
I heard you were really into paintball. Is that one of the ways you keep yourself busy during your downtime?
Oh yeah. Well, its something that I just started back up like during the summer with my friends. I used to tournament play like 5 or 6 years ago, when I was younger. We got back into it because I was bored and I started doing tournaments again about twice a week just to practice. I like it a lot; Im trying to get my little brother into it.
There is a MySpace profile for a Daniel Clark. Is that you? How do you feel about fans contacting you via sites like that?
I do have a MySpace and its really me. Theres one for the fan club and one that is mine; its under my name. I don’t think I have anything about Degrassi or my profession in there. I do mention paintball on my profile.
Whats your craziest fan story?
There are a few things. I’m fortunate that there have been no stalking type of incidents, just enthusiasm. At The N party (in NYC) – the fans were yelling, crying, puking. One girl did it all at the same time (laughter).
Who would you love to work with in the future?
Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Steven Spielberg. They’re on the top of my list.
Do you have any upcoming projects to let your fans know about?
I’m working on my craft. Id like to do anything Im challenged by. I’d like to do some war movies. I plan on going to LA in either December or January. Im hoping for good things.
I have to ask, are you dating anyone right now?
Im single right now. Im not dating anyone and Im into meeting new girls.
We ask this of all our MeeVee interviewees. What are your favorite TV shows?
My personal favorites are shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Simpsons, and I recently got into Prison Break. I like Seinfeld.
