One of Degrassi’s newest full-time cast members took home an award last night at the Geminis in Toronto.
Shenae Grimes won “best performance in a children’s series” for her role in Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Grimes was nominated for her work in “Eyes Without a Face, Pt. 2” from season six.
The Toronto native plays Darcy Edwards, who joined the show full-time last year after guest-starring on the series.
Darcy is Degrassi’s “good girl” who runs the Christian “Friendship Club.” She dated Spinner and then broke up with him when she found out about his history with Paige.
Prior to Degrassi, Grimes appeared in various commercial spots and a Whoopi Goldberg produced pilot for Nickelodeon. Grimes also guest starred on “Naturally, Sadie.”
Other nominees in the category included Alexz Johnson from “Instant Star.”
The Gemini Awards Gala will be held on Sunday, October 28, at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan.
While Grimes was successful, Degrassi lost the award for “Most Popular Website.”
Degrassi also received the following Gemini nominations:
“Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program or Series,” for Linda Schuyler, Stephen Stohn and Epitome Pictures Inc.
“Best Sound in a Dramatic Series,” for Steven Munro, Mike Baskerville, Danielle McBride, Bill McMillan, Virginia Storey, Paul Williamson in “Here Comes Your Man Pt. 1.”
“Best Original Music Score for a Dramatic Series” for Jim McGrath in “What’s It Feel Like To Be A Ghost? Pt. 1.”
The seventh season of Degrassi: The Next Generation is set to kick off this fall. It airs in Canada on CTV and in the U.S. on “The N.”
