‘Degrassi’ actress Nina Dobrev unfazed by growing fame

With the popularity of “Degrassi” south of the border and a starring role in MTV movie “The American Mall,” Nina Dobrev’s profile is rising like never before.
“Who knows what will happen after the movie — but I don’t get recognized that much now, and when I do, it’s not a big deal,” Dobrev tells CTV.ca.
“I’ve had kids come up to me and tell me they enjoy my work, and I love that too. But I do enjoy my privacy.”
Dobrev, 18, is best known to “Degrassi: The Next Generation” fans as single mother Mia Jones.
“Degrassi” airs in the U.S. on “The N,” as the channel’s most popular program.
Dobrev’s fame is now expected to grow by leaps and bounds with her new starring role in “The American Mall,” a musical comedy produced by MTV for the small screen.
The film follows Ally (Dobrev), a singer-songwriter who fights to keep her mother’s music store from being closed down.
The spunky flick is crammed with uptempo rock performances and star-lit ballads, and will satisfy fans of the wildly popular “High School Musical” franchise.
“It’s exciting to be a part of this whole musical boom,” says Dobrev.
“The American Mall” airs on August 11 at 9 p.m. ET on MuchMusic.
The actress, who attended last Wednesday night’s Chicago premiere of “The American Mall” — complete with 5,000 teenagers in attendance — remembers the night as a “crazy” experience.
“I wasn’t expecting anything, but by the end of the movie, they were all standing on their seats with their cell phones in the air, waving them like lighters at a concert,” says Dobrev.
“I was so touched, and I didn’t expect that.”
Born in Bulgaria, but a resident of Toronto, Ont. since the age of two, the actress has previously appeared in films “Fugitive Pieces” and “Away from Her.”
Putting rumours to rest
This past June, online rumours said that Dobrev was going to appear in the big screen sequel to “Transformers.”
“There’s nothing — it’s just a rumour and I have no idea how it started. I wish it was true, but I would have had to audition!” Dobrev says with a laugh.
“But after the rumour started, casting people for the movie actually called my agent, so now they know about me. I’m crossing my fingers for ‘Transformers 3.'”
Coming up on “Degrassi”
With season eight currently under production in Toronto, Dobrev promises fans that they’ll be seeing a lot more of Mia on the show this year. She also says that with eight new characters, filming this time around feels like a second high school experience.
“They are so excited — it’s like they are the ‘grade nines’ on set. And because this is my third season, I feel older and I’m helping them out… it’s a really cool dynamic.”
“Degrassi: The Next Generation” airs Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. ET on CTV.
